Choosing the Best Split System Air Conditioning Unit

Author: Lance Wiggers

Split system air conditioners come in a variety of designs to suit most homes and budgets. Choosing the air conditioning system which suits your needs may seem daunting. But with the right information, you will be able to choose a system to suit your home, providing year-round comfort to you and your family.

Reverse Cycle or Cooling Only?

Your first decision will be whether or not you need cooling only or both heating and cooling. If you have another form of heating already in your home, you may prefer to choose a split system air conditioning mandurah unit which cools only.

But if you’re looking for year-round conform in one unit, a reverse cycle system is probably more suited to your needs. A reverse cycle air conditioner will provide heating as well as cooling to keep you warm during the colder months. And depending on your current heating system, it may be more cost effective to choose this option. Most split systems come with heating and cooling as the only difference is a small reversing valve which costs around $100 less.

Room Size

You will want to measure the room that your new air conditioner will be in before you decide which unit to buy. If you end up with an air conditioner that’s too small for the area you wish to cool it will struggle to provide a good temperature. Not only that, it will be less efficient, using much more energy to cool or heat the room. This will end up costing you more in the long run. A professional will be able to determine the right unit that you will need to cool and heat your home efficiently.

How Many Rooms?

If your home isn’t suited to the ducted air conditioner and you want to cool multiple rooms, a multi-head split system may be what you need. Multi-head split systems consist of one outdoor unit which connects to two or more indoor units. This is suitable for cooling and heating multiple rooms which are close to each other.

Inverter or Non-Inverter

This is something you may need to consider, although the majority of split systems are inverters now. An inverter is able to vary the compressor speed which is located in the outdoor unit so that the compressor can speed up or slow down rather than switching on and off. This results in less energy being used as it maintains the temperature of the room. Generally, inverters are more efficient, so they cost less to run.

A non-inverter is usually less efficient. The compressor either runs at full power or it’s off. This may cause more wear to the compressor and use more power each time it has to start up. On the other hand, these models are cheaper to purchase initially. But the extra energy used may not make the initial saving worth it.
