When you add fuel, open the air controls for 20 minutes to get the wood-burning correctly and then you can keep the fire burning steadily. To achieve a complete burn, you need adequate airflow and a high enough temperature to get the fuel and flames glowing brightly.

If the wood is dark or smoky as it burns this is an incomplete burn due to an insufficient intake of air. Accelerants such as oil or petrol should not be used to light the fire because this could result in an explosion.

 

3) Effective overnight burning

 

If you want to burn fuel overnight, load up the wood heater around half an hour before you retire. Turn the air supply down to a minimum when the wood has been charred. This should take around 15-20 minutes, and it’s necessary to avoid any creosote issues.

Most modern wood heaters will burn for 7-8 hours with no problems if you fill the heater with fuel and turn it to the slow burn setting immediately. Slow-burning for long periods will produce more creosote than burning or a medium or high setting.

Using a wood heater for prolonged periods will take some getting used to before you get a good feel for it. If your home is well insulated, you may not need to burn overnight unless it’s exceptionally cold.

The main difference between them is that a PWM solar controller draws a current out of the panels just above the battery voltage, whereas a MPPT solar charge controller draws a current out of the panels at maximum voltage power.

  4. If all the panels read around 18V, check the wiring to see if there is a connection issue.

The controller isn’t turning on

The controller might not be turning on because of wiring issues or because the system isn’t configured correctly. Try rewiring the system and if this does not work, perform a reset on the controller.

 

How to reset your solar controller

Resetting your solar controller means you are returning the controller back to its factory settings. Resetting the entire system may help fix issues with the controller if your other troubleshooting methods have not worked.

You should perform a reset at night time or, if doing the reset during daylight hours, cover up your solar panels for safety. Make sure you follow the user manual instructions.

To perform a soft reset:

  1. Press all four buttons on the front of the controller.

There are different types and brands of smart meters, so methods of how to read a smart meter with solar power may vary. However, the general idea is outlined below based on the three-phase AMI smart meter that Western Power uses.

Step 1. Understanding your way around the meter

A smart meter will usually consist of:

  • LCD digital display where the information is displayed
  • Nameplate label where the technical product information and serial number are written
  • Scroll button which you can use to scroll through the different categories on the LCD display
  • Test LED lights that pulse when electricity is being used
  • Infrared optical port where information can be downloaded via an optical probe cable and a handheld unit
  • Plastic case protecting the inside of the meter

Step 2. Know the type of tariff you pay

In order to read the right information concerning your property, you need to know the type of tariff you pay. For example, in Western Australia that might be the all-time A1 tariff or the smart power SM1 tariff. The data for each of these will show up under a different category, so you will need to know which one is relevant for your home.

Step 3. Reading the import information (energy consumed)

The import information shows you data relating to the amount of energy you used from the grid. This information is displayed in the standard display mode and you should see it automatically when you look at your smart meter.

The LCD display will automatically scroll through the different channels, but if you want to speed up the scrolling, simply use the scroll button.

  • Channel 04 displays the time
  • Channel 05 displays the date

For the A1 tariff, just read:

  • Channel 07 – displays the total kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed

For the SM1 tariff, read:

  • Channel 10
  • Channel 20
  • Channel 30
  • Channel 40

These channels show the total kWh consumed at the different rates according to your SM1 tariff.

Step 4. Reading the export information (energy generated)

The export information gives you data about the amount of energy your household generated, for example through solar panels. In other words, how many kilowatt hours (kWh) of excess energy was sent back to the energy provider.

The export information is displayed on the alternate mode display (the import information is the standard display mode). To make the export information show, simply hold down the scroll button for 2 seconds and “Alt 1” should appear on the LCD display. Now you will see the alternative display for energy generated.

There are many different factors that will change the total cost of installing ducted air conditioning which is known as the best way to heat and cool your home.  The best way to digest the costs involved with ducted air conditioning is to split the overall cost up into three parts –

1. The cost of ducted air conditioning unit
2. The cost of the ducted air conditioning components (duct, vents etc.)
3. The cost of the installation (labour)

All three parts are equally as important to ensure you have a ducted air conditioning system that is efficient and reliable for many years to come.

The Cost of Ducted Air Conditioning Unit

Here at iBreeze we consider this a very important part of the design phase because the outdoor units blow out extreme temperature air, from 1 degree – 60 degrees. They also make some noise because they have either a single or twin fan plus multiple compressors. You obviously dont want this outdoor unit installed under your outdoor entertaining area or right next to a bedroom window.

At iBreeze, we will normally give our clients a couple of options for the outdoor unit locations. If there is no suitable position on the ground around the home we have other options to accommodate your needs.

Roof Brackets – We can install the outdoor units on the roof on specially manufactured roof brackets. How does Ducted Air Conditioning Work?

Ducted refrigerated air conditioning involves an outdoor condenser unit and indoor fan coil which work together to distribute the ideal tempered air into your home or office.

The outdoor Ducted refrigerated air conditioning unit has a fan (or fans) a compressor and coil. When operating the fan funnel s air over the coil that contains refrigerant. This transfers heating or cooling from the refrigerant to the outdoor air. If in cooling mode, hot air will be pushed out from the outdoor unit which cools the refrigerant. This refrigerant is then pumped back through to the indoor unit where the indoor fan pushes air across the coil which delivers cold air into the home. The opposite process happens when the ducted air conditioning system is in heating mode.

Here is a simple breakdown of the actions in cooling mode (reversed for heating) –

  1. The ducted air conditioning system pulls in warm air from inside the room through a return air grille with filter.
  2. This warm air flows moves a set of coils which contains the cold refrigerant. As the air moves over the coils, the fluid becomes hotter while the air becomes colder.
  3. The air conditioning systems indoor fan then blows the air back into the room. Over time, this cycle will cool the room to your desired temperature.
  4. The refrigerant fluid which made the air colder, but absorbed all the heat, now has to be cooled down again. It flows through the compressor and the pressure is increased, and then cooled down through the condenser unit.
  5. Now the gas repeats its cycle to cool again.

How to light your wood heater?

So you have your new wood heater installed but are having trouble lighting it. The easiest way to light your wood fire is to lay two pieces of wood side by side with a fist sized gap between them. These two pieces of wood should be about 15cm high. Next step is to scrunch up 3-4 pieces of newspaper and put it in-between the two pieces of wood. Then we recommend you place 2 fire lighters on top of the newspaper; one near the back and one near the front of the heater. Finally you want to start stacking the wood across the two large pieces of wood you have setup. Use small kindling and lay them all the same direction leaving about a 1cm gap in between. Once this is completed, light the fire and continue to carefully stack the kindling the other way until you have 2-3 rows stacked on each other. The size of the kindling can get bigger as you keep stacking. Please make sure you leave adequate space in between the kindling so the wood fire can breathe! Also make sure you have the air dampeners fully open so the fire can roar! Place a couple of bigger pieces of wood on top of the kindling and simply close the door and leave the wood heater for 20 minutes or so. Your wood heater should be blazing by now so you can start to put bigger pieces of wood on and adjust the air controllers to suit.
