10 Tips for getting the most out of your Air Conditioner

Author: Lance Wiggers

Obviously, there are different types of systems and you will get different results depending on the type of air conditioner you have. Fans aren’t air conditioners, but they can provide a small amount of relief on a hot day.

The next step up is a split system air conditioning system. These are usually wall mounted units that generally cost between $1500 and $3500 fully installed (depending on how complex the installation is) – and will adequately heat or cool the room they are installed into the temperature you desire.

Air Conditioning System

The top end system is ducted refrigerated air conditioning. These are more expensive to install, but are neat, tidy and offer heating and cooling throughout the entire home with zoned areas. iBreeze highly recommends installing one of our solar power systems when looking at ducted refrigerated air con to offset the daytime running costs.

If you have noticed an increase in your electricity bills over the last few months or if you have noticed your air conditioner isn’t cooling properly, we can help. Here are some helpful ideas about air conditioning that will make sure your air conditioner, ducted or split system, will operate to its optimal efficiency through the harshest weather conditions –

Keep your air conditioner set at 24-25°

The recommended temperature for your air conditioning system is 24-25°C in the summer months and 18 – 20°C in the winter months. These temperatures are comfortable and avoid having your air conditioning system working really hard to maintain a ridiculous temperature.

Start your air conditioner early in the morning

Most people believe to save money and be more economical they must wait until the hottest part of the day to turn the system on because it won’t be running for a long period of time. This is totally incorrect and in fact, this works the opposite way. It is more efficient to turn your air con system on early in the morning while the home is still relatively cool so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard and battle against the well-established heat.

Close doors and windows

In areas you want to stay cool or warm, keep doors closed inside the home. This will help keep the air-conditioned air in and the ambient air out. This will also help reduce the temperature in the rooms you want to heat or cool faster.

Avoid excessive temperatures on start-up

Avoid setting your air con controller at a colder or hotter setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioning system. It will not cool or heat your home or office any faster and will more than likely be more costly to run.

Avoid using indoor appliances

On hot days take advantage of using the BBQ or outdoor kitchen. Using your inside oven on hot days with no ventilation will increase the temperature loads and make your air conditioning system work harder and in-turn cost you more to run.

Turn off air con in unoccupied rooms when zoned

If a room or area is not occupied, turn the air conditioning off and close the door. This reduces the workload of your ducted air conditioning unit helping to increase energy efficiency and save on running costs. Remember to keep a minimum of one to two zones running to avoid ductwork blowing off the system.

Draw the Curtains

Keep your curtains or blinds closed through Summer and Winter. This serves to keep the internal room temperature from rising or falling and your air conditioner from kicking in to manage and regulate the temperature. If your curtains are open there is nothing to stop the sunlight from heating your home or the cold temperatures from getting in, therefore your air conditioning system has to work harder, which means a higher bill.

What does reverse-cycle mean?

Reverse-cycle means that the refrigeration cycle can be reversed in your air conditioner. Therefore, you have total climate control with the convenience of cold or hot air, perfect for keeping you comfortable through both Winter and Summer.

Get an annual service

A maintenance and cleaning service from a qualified technician is recommended a minimum annually to make sure your system is running at its best performance and top efficiency.

Set timers for ducted

If you have ducted air conditioning you could choose to set timers for when your system will operate according to where you are in the home. For example, if you wake at 6am, you could set a timer to turn on your ducted in the ensuite and kitchen area at 5am, therefore these areas would be cooled or heated long before you go to that area of the home, maximising your comfort without any effort. Great for chilly winter mornings or humid summer days.

Following these ideas should assist out in reducing bills as they guide you to use less power when operating your air conditioner. Whether it’s Summer or Winter even a small change to how you operate your air conditioner system will make a difference. Please call us on 95349491 if you have any queries.
